Healthy Breakfast Options to Give You a Good Start Each Day

Last updated 2 months ago

“Every day starts with a hearty breakfast,” the old saying goes. In a nation where one-third of adults are obese, these “hearty” breakfasts are somewhat problematic. Your goal for breakfast should be to eat a dish that is filling but healthy, such as one of the following:

Oatmeal

Heart disease is America’s leading cause of death. Breakfast grains like oatmeal have been shown in countless studies to lower your risk of heart attack. This is because oats act as sponges that soak up cholesterol and move it out of your body. Oatmeal has little taste on its own, leaving you free to flavor it however you like. Try it with maple syrup, raisins, brown sugar, or fresh fruit, and you’ve got a perfect start to your day.

Egg Whites

Your breakfast should pack as much protein as possible, and eggs are a great way to do this. Egg yolks are very high in fat and cholesterol, so ask your favorite breakfast place for just the whites in your next omelette or scramble for a fat-free source of protein.

Grapefruit

These bitter fruits may not be everyone’s favorite, but if you want to eat a better breakfast, you should embrace the bitterness. Grapefruits contain high levels of naringenin, which is an antioxidant that literally dissolves body fat. Having been processed, grapefruit juice from a bottle does not contain naringenin.

Greek Yogurt Parfait

This thick, satisfying style of yogurt has become very popular in recent years due to its low sugar and high protein, which stems from the huge amount of milk that goes into it. Many restaurants now offer breakfast parfaits, which layer yogurt and fruit in a tall glass for huge doses of protein, vitamins, and minerals to give you energy all day long.
