Coffee is America’s favorite morning beverage, both home and in breakfast restaurants, with the average American drinking a stunning 26 gallons per year. But coffee is not just a wake-up call; it is also a major source of health benefits for those who drink it. Coffee’s health benefits include:
Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
-
Harvard University researchers gathered data from nine studies on coffee and type 2 diabetes and analyzed them for patterns. They found a conclusive link between drinking coffee and a lower risk of diabetes. In fact, those who drank more than six cups of coffee per day were 45% less at risk of diabetes than those who drank the least. Coffee contains high levels of antioxidants, and the chromium and magnesium in coffee help the body process sugar when insulin cannot.
Less Cognitive Degeneration
-
Cognitive function naturally declines gradually as part of the aging process, and drinking coffee is a great way to minimize that decline. The antioxidants and caffeine in coffee have long been known to be very effective in staving off age-related brain dysfunction. For example, a joint Swedish and Finnish study showed that people who drank three to five cups of coffee daily were 65% less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia than those who drank little coffee or none at all.
Prevention of Liver Disease
-
The high antioxidant capacity of coffee has been linked to better overall health of the liver. Numerous studies have shown that coffee consumption leads to lower incidences of cirrhosis and cancer of the liver. In addition, four studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that only caffeinated coffee provided this health benefit, especially in staving off fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is a precursor to many serious health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and liver scarring.

In this video, a nutrition expert discusses the differences between these two styles of yogurt. The key difference is that Greek yogurt is strained longer, leading to a thicker consistency with less sugar and more protein. Click play to learn more.

“Every day starts with a hearty breakfast,” the old saying goes. In a nation where one-third of adults are obese, these “hearty” breakfasts are somewhat problematic. Your goal for breakfast should be to eat a dish that is filling but healthy, such as one of the following:
Oatmeal
Heart disease is America’s leading cause of death. Breakfast grains like oatmeal have been shown in countless studies to lower your risk of heart attack. This is because oats act as sponges that soak up cholesterol and move it out of your body. Oatmeal has little taste on its own, leaving you free to flavor it however you like. Try it with maple syrup, raisins, brown sugar, or fresh fruit, and you’ve got a perfect start to your day.
Egg Whites
Your breakfast should pack as much protein as possible, and eggs are a great way to do this. Egg yolks are very high in fat and cholesterol, so ask your favorite breakfast place for just the whites in your next omelette or scramble for a fat-free source of protein.
Grapefruit
These bitter fruits may not be everyone’s favorite, but if you want to eat a better breakfast, you should embrace the bitterness. Grapefruits contain high levels of naringenin, which is an antioxidant that literally dissolves body fat. Having been processed, grapefruit juice from a bottle does not contain naringenin.
Greek Yogurt Parfait
This thick, satisfying style of yogurt has become very popular in recent years due to its low sugar and high protein, which stems from the huge amount of milk that goes into it. Many restaurants now offer breakfast parfaits, which layer yogurt and fruit in a tall glass for huge doses of protein, vitamins, and minerals to give you energy all day long.
